Quick Skyrim love.

I have been playing The Elders Scrolls 5: Skyrim, since release day.  I have found it to be at least the best game released this year. The story is deep and over satisfying, the combat flows vastly better than it did in Oblivion. I find it to be a return to Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. You will even find a lot of Morrowind references throughout the game.  If you are like me you lived and breathed Morrowind I have covered before how much time I spent in that game.

If you are an achievement whore or trophy whore you won’t find them to be much of a challenge, I was able to get them within a few weeks of playing, or a day or two if you really just grind them out.  The one thing you have to understand about this game is that the world itself is huge I mean it’s the biggest world I have ever seen. It is literally a mini game trying to run from one city to another.

It hardly matters what race you chose to play, I have noticed small differences in the way people talk to you or react to your race. The details in the game are second to none all the small things they put into this game really make the difference in how good it comes out.  We have found all kinds of little details for example a dead body on the ground with a giants club smashed into his “head” or the place where his head should have been.

And let me tell you what Giants in this game do not fuck around; it’s never smart to pick a fight with one unless you are ready for a showdown. Most of the time giants have lots of back up, it could be a Mammoth or another Giant they hardly ever rock it solo. There never seems to be a lack of something to do or something new to find in this game, it’s damn near endless.

Basically if you haven’t yet picked up this enormous quest of doom, beg Santa for it!!

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was first showcased at PAX 2011 in Boston, MA on March 11th. The concept of Amalur and it's history and lore were created by R.A.Salvatore and the artwork is being done by Todd McFarlane. With those two powerhouses as part of the storyboard & design, we can no doubt expect a beautiful, engaging game with a compelling storyline set in a rich, detailed world. From the videos and trailers I've seen thus far, the game already looks beautiful. The release date is currently February 7th, 2012 for U.S. and February 10th for Europe. I've already got my pre-order at GameStop. I figure right about the time I'm done with Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and mostly played out on Battlefield 3, this game should be ready to release. I'm looking forward to it, especially when I heard Salvatore had created the world. I've been a fan of his writing for something like 18 years, when I bought my first ever Campaign Setting for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons called Menzoberranzan. I was instantly hooked on Salvatore, Drizz't Do'Urden and D&D in general. For now, I'm living it up in Tamriel, but come February, you can find me in Amalur.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

So, Skyrim has been out for 7 days now, and I figured it was time to give ya'll a rundown on how the game is going for me, so far. Honestly, if there's anyone still left on the fence about this game, I'd be pretty fucking surprised. I've already put well over 40 hours into this game, with no clear end in sight. There is so much to do, so many options available to you, it can be daunting, even a bit overwhelming. There are hundreds of caves, mines, ruins, forts, towns, camps and oddities to explore around the world. It's so freaking huge, but holy shit, is it beautiful. I'm constantly finding myself in awe of things I come across. The attention to detail is bloody amazing. From the strange things you'll find to the random comments people around you will make. There are numerous large questlines to follow, similar to previous TES titles. Skyrim has it's own versions of the traditional Guilds. Mages, Fighters and Thieves, the return of the Dark Brotherhood. Tons of other questlines of varying length, Radiant Quests that you can quite literally do forever. Tasks you can pick up in town or out in the wild. Easter Eggs everywhere, keep your eyes open. Honestly, when I first heard the Strategy Guide for Skyrim was over 650 pages long, I was stunned, but after spending a brief amount of time in-game, I'm not surprised anymore.

The game has a few bugs, I'd be lying if I said it was perfect, but I will say they're relatively few. Save often, and save in more than one slot. You'll thank yourself for it later. I've only come across a debilitating bug one time during a Quest where I could not complete my objective. I had to reload a much older game save and lose a lot of spent time & experience. I learned my lesson and now save more often. Autosaves can also save your ass. I've been playing the game on the lowest difficulty. I'm still having a great time and it is still quite often challenging. There are no benefits, aside from bragging rights I guess, to playing on harder difficulties.

The crafting is extremely well done. Smithing is brand new and amazing, while Alchemy & Enchanting have had a bit of an overhaul. The combination of all 3 can produce seriously powerful results. I still have yet to complete the Main Quest on either of my two characters, but I feel absolutely no reason to rush to the "End" of the main story. On my newest character, a very melee-oriented, heavily armored, Shield-Bashing Master Smith, I'm just running around the world doing random dungeons & caves, not really doing any actual quests unless I stumble upon them. And I'm really enjoying myself.

So, in the insanely unlikely chance anyone out there is still undecided for this game, I have this to say to you: If you like Action/RPG's at all, then you need to own this game. Period.

If I had a rating system, this would get 5/5 Stars or score a Perfect "10" purely for appearance, sound, music score and addictive gameplay.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North

Bizarro & I snagged this game on the 2nd and, I have to say, we've played the shit out of it. Three back-to-back games on Normal, Hard & Legendary, and I honestly can't remember the last time I was able to sit and play a game start to finish, and then start right over again. The gameplay is enjoyable, the controls are tolerable, the storyline is decent, but often seems a bit off the mark from actual Tolkein canon. (Radagast seemed a bit too friendly for a wizard who wasn't overly fond of people, and a wizard who is extremely knowledgable about birds, beasts and creatures being caught unawares and kidnapped by spiders seemed a bit rediculous to me)

The game plays a lot like Diablo 2 or a dozen other Dungeon Crawl type games, I think they overstated the whole "Combo your attacks together with your friends for devastating effect", because as far as I can tell, it doesn't make much of a difference. After 5 or 6 days we earned almost every single achievement (Bizarro actually got them all, I'm only missing 2). It's a great game, but if I was being honest with you & myself, it probably wasn't worth the full $60. Rent, borrow or buy this game when the price drops for a good, enjoyable time sink.

I'm happily chewing up time now until (Dun dun dun!) Skyrim, which releases tomorrow night at Midnight, when I will be leaving work and heading to my local GameStop to snag my already fully-paid copy and then break speed limits to get home and watch with awe as 5-6 hours disappear and I force myself to sleep a few hours before cramming some more Skyrim time in before work on Friday. Until then, a measly 26 or so hours, I have Stephen King's On Writing and Battlefield 3 to occupy my time. See you in Tamriel.

Soon my friends...SOON.

It’s nearly here boys and girl. Battlefield 3 will be released in just a few short days. Unlike most of you I will not be going to any midnight release for the game. My Xbox is still not back from repair land. But it’s making its way here. Sadly it won’t be here till Wednesday after noon.

However I’m sure most people will be in the mid 20s by the time I start playing the game, and that’s good it gives them a chance against me. I plan on fully destroying that game when I get it, I’m talking non-stop playing till Sunday night when I pass out in a awesome pool of my own filth.

I don’t know about some of you but for me BF3 marks the start of some hardcore gaming. That lasts till I get Skyrim.  After the buy BF3 the next on my list is “The Lord of the Rings: War in the North.” And I fully expect to play that to death as well. Then of course is Skyrim, and I’m not sure if I am going to follow Skyrim with “Halo: Combat evolved” or “Batman: Arkham City” I haven’t really broken it down yet.

I do know that after I pay off Skyrim, I am going to save every cent I can spare, so I can just fucking wreck “Black Friday” you can get some of the best video game deals on that day. I also like to stock up on Blurays and other interesting shit. Anyhow back to the battlefield, if you haven’t seen it yet there is an interesting few web episodes of something calledTheController - Battlefield 3 - Episode 1
it’s a fun little thing that pits 6 Pro-Gamers with 6 nOObs. As they compete for $50k cash. It’s worth checking out if you are a fan of the new battlefield game or you just like to make fun of nOObs.

Pre-Order Hell.

I don’t know about you folks, but I am sick to death of competitive DLC for games. What I mean by that is every store that sells games has different DLC for pre-ordering a single game. For an example Batman: Arkham City, has so much shit for pre-order. Best Buy has the “exclusive Tim Drake Robin skin” while the GameStop/EB Games has the “Joker’s Carnival of Horrors challenge map” Amazon it’s self has its own pre-order and so does Wal-mart.

To be honest with you I wanted to pre-order this game, but I had a lot on my plate to begin with so I couldn’t get it done. However looking at all this pre-order shit even if I wanted that Robin skin from Best Buy I wouldn’t get it, I never pre-order anything from anyplace that’s not GameStop.  It’s a matter of convenience, for me and I don’t buy shit online for the most part.

I understand the need to compete for sales, video games are a huge industry that makes a ton of money and everyone wants a part of it. I just don’t like being stuck in the middle, most of all I don’t like being stuck in the middle of a pre-order war that generally ends in Xbox live selling that same shit later.  I remember the big pre-order whoa, over “War for Cybertron” these entire different player skins, from all these different places then they released every one of the skins as a DLC pack.

The release of all the skins pissed so many people off, I remember hearing a story about how some dude drove miles out of his way just to get the Jazz skin from Best Buy only to find out a couple of months later he could have got it with the DLC pack. Also you have the people who order more than one game from different locations just to get all that DLC and I think this is what the parent company of said game company want.

If they can get you to buy two of the same thing just for that little bit of DLC, they got you by the nuts. But then again this isn’t exactly a perfect plan because you can very easily turn around and sell that shit to Game Stop unopened and get a decent trade in and Power up points. Regardless of any thing I personally feel that if they want to offer exclusive DLC I think they should keep it to different copies of the game, like a special Edition or a limited edition. That would give me more of a chance to get what it is I want.

When I do buy Arkham City I will be getting the collector’s edition, because I am a huge fan of “Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns” and as I understand it the collector’s edition of the game comes with that Batman skin and so far that is the only way to get it. I understand that some people think that a little healthy competition is good, and they don’t mind being jerked around by these corporations. Personally I’m about sick of it; I don’t need a trick to make me buy a game if I want it I will get it. Pre-order shit is cool but it’s never enough to make me buy something.

American Horror Story

Once you get past the dead babies, nosy neighbors, freaky sex and psychotic ghosts, L.A. would still be a pretty shitty place to live. FX's new original series American Horror Story serves up a large dose of creativity, suspense, drama and flashy horror. While FX has compiled a choice set of actors to play out this psycho-drama for our viewing pleasure, Jessica Lange really shines with her cold and sinister intentions towards Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott) and his family, all the while wearing the facade of a friendly, if overly nosy, neighbor. Two episodes in and I can already number myself among the fans of this new show. I really enjoyed Nip/Tuck, even though the series became overwhelmingly dramatic towards the end, and you can definitely feel the same style in AHS. McDermott is back with all his matinee idol intensity, still looking exactly the same as he did 10+ years ago. I swear, that man doesn't age. I'm looking forward to being puzzled moreso as the series continues, unless they start dropping the ball on the writing. The best word I can use to describe the show is "Freaky". Give it a watch and you'll see what I mean.

The Rum Diary

Johnny Depp is back filling the shoes, of the late great Hunter S. Thompson. The Rum Diary was written in the early 1960s but was not published until 1998. The stories Protagonist is a journalist named Paul Kemp, who moves from New York to work for a major newspaper, The Daily News, in San Juan, Porto Rico.

Set in the late 1950s, the novel encompasses a tangled love story of jealousy, treachery and violent alcoholic lust among the Americans who staff the newspaper.

Hunter and Depp are the best kind of combo; if you ever saw Johnny in "Fear and loathing in Las Vegas" You know exactly what I mean. Hunters Panicked paced writing style fits Deeps manic acting ability to a tee. I personally cannot wait to get in line for this flick On Oct.24th, and Im sure I cant be the only one.

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Oct. 21, 2008 BioWare announced their upcoming MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic and slowly began leaking bits & pieces of info to their rabid fan base, which no doubt counts amongst it's numbers old Star Wars geeks, Star Wars: Galaxies fans and many a MMO'er besides.

Slated to release Dec. 20th, 2011, SW:TOR will be available just in time for the ultimate stocking stuffer. Back when I still counted myself among the teeming hordes of MMO gamers, I was frothing at the bit over this title as the answer to "all the modern day MMO woes". After finally prying my fat ass from the PC for a few months my addiction slowly abated and my excitement dimmed. The Star Wars nerd in me is still very interested in this game, and I dearly hope some of the early reports I've heard & read from various sources that described the E3 Demo as a "WoW Clone with a heavy story influence", were largely premature and inaccurate. Like many long-term MMO gamers, I've long since lost all hope that a game will come out that manages to capture the nostalgia and immersion of early titles (Like EverQuest).

Sadly, today's world of "Fast Food" MMO gaming and Micro-Transactions that endlessly serve up instant gratification to all the millions of people who....well, obviously want that sort of thing. For some of us old-schoolers, we remember with pride spending those 18 hours in Lower Guk to farm a Short Sword of the Ykesha and Flowing Black Silk Sash, and dammit, we fucking reveled in our achievement. Granted I can only speak for myself, but I loved the time I was forced to spend socializing with other players while we farmed XP & loot. Real communities were developed and guilds were a real family of players bound together by friendship and shared goals. But alas, I digress.

A small part of me still holds out hope for Star Wars: The Old Republic, but a larger part of me feels like my days of Massive Multiplayer Online gaming may well be behind me. The truth is, no game can possibly ever hold up to the diluted memories and misplaced nostalgia of games long since past their prime. (As is obvious by the fact I'm not still playing them)

I love BioWare and they're making some of the best RPG's on the market today (Mass Effect, Dragon Age), so there's a high likelihood this game will turn out to be exactly what they've promised. But, I've been let down too many damn times in the past by "the next big thing" and I've lost my faith, oh my gaming Brothers & Sisters. (Age of Conan, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, etc)

I'll definitely play the Free Trial in a year or so when they offer it, but unless I get some seriously luminescent feedback from some friends who have had the game pre-ordered since GameStop started taking them, I won't be there at release.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Well, I finally got around to renting this via Zune on Xbox Live. Absolutely the best of the run, thus far. Michael Bay delivers another rockin' blockbuster. 157 minutes of non-stop action, explosions, violence and, oh yeah, fucking Transformers. The past decade has seen a lot of our childhood brought to the silver screen with Comic book characters and cartoons, but I gotta say, this movie might be one of the coolest I've seen. I've liked all the films so far, and this one the best, I won't reveal any spoilers but despite the conclusion, I hope they make another film or two with Bay at the helm.

Thurston Moore Signature Jazzmaster

This has got to be one of the coolest things, a Thurston Moore Fender Jazzmaster. If you are a fan of Sonic Youth or just a fan of Jazzmasters, this has got to be at the top of your list for must buys. I am a big fan of the custom Jazzmasters, the Elvis Costello signature is one of my personal favorites but this one might in fact move to the top spot. You can find this lovely at:

COD vs. Battlefield

Like many people in the gaming community, I have been following the battle that has been looming for months and possibly even years on which game is the best of these two giants. For many years I was a Halo player and eventually picked up COD World at War, which is an awesome game, and I was totally drawn in by the story and the historical aspects of the game, video footage and the weapons of the era. The veteran campaign for this game is by far the hardest I have attempted to play and I can not count the number of times I wanted to throw the controller and spew profanity like a erupting volcano...very frustrating indeed. But none the less, a very good game.

I picked up COD Black Ops after World at War and thought the game was good, cleaned up graphics and pretty good over all control but I didn't find myself really caring a whole hell of a lot about the characters in the campaign and just tried to drudge through it to get it done. Playing the multiplayer, I soon became very frustrated with the unstoppable force of the magical knife. It seemed that even looking upon this small weapon of mass destruction would kill you from 20 yards away, and it did many times over and over. The lack of dedicated servers reared it's ugly head the more I played and I watched the replays in dismay, as it showed me with my weapon down and I knew I was shooting before the enemy saw me.

My experience with MW2 campaign was good and I liked the story line but the multiplayer was not better by any means, but I still bought the map packs at the persistence of my friends to get them, thinking it would make the game better....it didn't. Grenade launchers, knives and quick scoping made the game very unpleasurable fast! Then we add the modders to the mix and you have a mess with all of the COD games. Flying soldiers, attack dogs right when the game starts, etc...and none if these things are being fixed by the COD guys. I mean..they already have our money so what reason do they have to fix it? You can just hope you get in a game that works the way it's supposed to.

The new video on the 360 dashboard for MW3 is very bad, buffering endlessly with only being able to see 4 seconds of footage at a time, it starts to give you a headache very quickly. With all of the bad press the game is getting before it's release, it would have been a good idea to release a better video or a beta for that matter. But why release a beta when you're releasing the same game you already know works?

My experience with Battlefield Bad Company 2 was very different. I was able to shoot through boxes and fences, by the way it's really what bullets can do, taking away the irritation of the corner camper. The snipers in buildings were dealt with very quickly with blowing the building up, by the way, it's what a tank can really do to a building and tanks were taken care of with missles from an Apache. Apache's can really blow up tanks and vehicles. The game is very well balanced with the vehicles and weapons and the campaign was a lot of fun playing with a very interesting story and characters that drew you in fast. The Battlefield beta was good for being a pre-E3 game and I am looking forward to the playing the finished product.

The constant improvements that Battlefield has been making through their games shows that they are doing their job on making a better and different game for all of us. I mean honestly, If I'm going to drop $60 on a new game, it should be new and not some rehashed version of the same game they've been doing for years. There are very few games that you can be awesome at the day it comes out so, if you want to be awesome from day 1, COD MW3 is for you.

The Rundown

Past, Present and Future:

Here it is, folks. A quickie, half-assed review of several games recently released or nearly in our hands. The end of 2011 is packed with promising gaming goodness that ought to tide even the most avid gamer over until at least...January.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

Released Sept. 6th, 2011, this Grim-Dark themed powerhouse star of tabletop, RPG, RTS, novels and general Sci-Fi excellence was truly Epic, albeit short-lived. Intense, non-stop action, graphic violence & gore, beautiful cutscenes and a well-done, faithful-to-the-IP storyline, I immensely loved Space Marine for 15 or so hours it took to reach it's shocking & entirely WH40k loyal conclusion. Absolutely worth the money for any diehard fan of the genre. Go forth my Battle-Brothers, suffer not the Heretic to Live.

Gears of War 3:

Sept. 20th gave us the long-awaited and highly anticipated finale to the much-beloved Gears of War series, and while I was new to the IP with the third game, I was quickly drawn into the story and gameplay. Absolutely stunning environments, addictive & nearly non-stop combat (Seriously, for every 15 seconds you spend doing idle things like "talking" or watching cutscenes is answered by another 30 minutes of gunfire, explosions & lambent berserkers raping your face), the game was exciting from the first minute to the very last. My friends & I went through it on Hardcore and it was a great challenge, full of instant-deaths, failed grenade tags, 30 minute boss fights that honestly gave a great sense of achievement with a spectacular grand finale.
For those of you loyal to the series, well, you've probably already bought & beaten this game, for those of you still on the fence, I give it my highest recommendation. Truly a winner.

Battlefield 3:

Coming out October 25, Battlefield promises us all the explosive, fast-paced FPS fun we've come to expect from EA/DICE...and more. Many details can be found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlefield_3 or www.battlefield.com/battlefield3. Suffice it to say, if you're not eagerly awaiting this release, you might be one of those other people. The ones waiting for the next Call of Duty. I don't strictly stand on one side or the other of this fence, but my friends play BF, so that's where I'll be biding my time from the 25th til....

Lord of the Rings: War in the North;

Ahh, November. BF3 will quickly get shelved (Temporarily, mind you) as I lay my mitts on this little treasure. Developed by Snowblind Studio's (Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath), everything I've seen & heard about this game looks fantastic. Sure, it's LOTR, and ever since the movies came out we've been innundated with games, action figures, posters, at least a dozen different Blu-Ray/DVD special editions, extended cuts, director's cuts, etc. So, what's different this time? Well, for one, while Frodo is off to the south heading for Mordor and certain doom to destroy the One Ring, you will be, as the title suggests, warring it up in the North. Cameo's are expected & confirmed by all-too familiar faces, no doubt to set us on our path and what have you. What appeals most to me is the co-op campaign mode, which the game was actually designed around. More info can be found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings:_War_in_the_North and www.warinthenorth.com/.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

And finally, the long-awaited Elder Scrolls V hits the shelves 11/11/11. War in the North will take it's place beside Battlefield 3 as my friend & I spend the next segment of our lives exploring, destroying, abusing and plundering Tamriel's northernmost continent, Skyrim.
You can find a massive amount of information about this game at virtually any site Google points you towards, so let me just say, I have long since thrown out "Cautiously Optimistic" and gone into full-blown geek-mode for this game. As my comrade said in his earlier post, what we're most hoping for is all the awesomeness of Morrowind with some of the finer aspects of Oblivion. The return of both the Morag Tong AND the Dark Brotherhood (Same writer from Oblivion, so expect more kickassery), Dragon Shouts, Double Fisting Magicka & Dual Wielding. A re-vamp to the level system (Yay, classless, non-skill based XP leveling!), new spells and much, much more.
I fully expect to still be playing this game past Christmas and into the New Year as I delve into each & every dungeon and cave, complete every quest line and locate as many secrets and as much filthy lucre I can get my greedy paws on.

Game On, Brothers & Sisters

Skyrim!

As a lot of people are I am very excited for The Elders scrolls IV: Skyrim. If you are like us we are fans of the Elders Scrolls from way back, my friends and I played the living shit out of Morrowind for the original X-box, and even played it on the PC. I can think back to that game and for some reason it just sticks in my head, I can remember the quests I can remember the feel of it, Oblivion didn’t come close to capturing the huge scale of the game.
Dravic the Bloodtaker was born out of Morrowind, and has continued to be my adventuring sidekick for the rest of the Elder Scroll games. I spent countless hours developing that character, and making him into an all powerful god. I looted every cave; found every overly powerful weapon did every quest I could. Then the inevitable happened, I became so powerful I had to kill everything in the game.
Nothing was safe from my reign of terror, lowly NPC, guards and wizards they all fell before the Bloodtaker. With the power of my homemade spells I would levitate over cities and literally kill every walking NPC with the power of my AoE nuke. These are the kind of things that are missing from Oblivion, these kinds of freedoms. If I want to kill a town with my awesome powers of awesomesauce I should be able to.
I hope that when Skyrim is released, it will carry with it this kind of freedom. It’s not that I want to kill everything in the game I just want the freedom too. I want to be so powerful, NPCs run for cover.  I was around level 120 at the end of Morrowind, and I had a long sword skill around 2,000 something. Yes I used a glitch, (get over it). From the videos I have seen of Skyrim it seems they are bringing back the feeling of power to the player, I never felt that way in Oblivion I felt like I was held back, by the main story and the lack of authority given to my player.
I have nothing but hope for the Elder Scroll’s series, they seem to be fixing a lot of the issues that Oblivion had. Bringing all the power back to the player, fixing the combat animations, duel wielding, and better main storyline, everything about this game is going to be fantastic. If I had the money to blow I would buy that collector’s edition for $150 bucks or whatever the ridiculous price is. Until then I will see you in Tamriel!

GAME FUEL 2011

I would like to just say how awesome the new game fuel is this year. While I don’t enjoy the Call of duty double xp promo, I guess you can’t do much about it. My wife picked me up a 12 pack on her way home the other day, and to my surprise it was badass! It kind of reminds me of the Baja blast flavor you can only get at Taco Bell, it has less of that Pena colada flavor and more of a Tropical punch taste.  It definitely has a great flavor and I hope it’s around for a little longer than normal.
